Matt Rothschild

A Progressive Cockeyed Optimism (Hour 1)

February 27, 2025

Matt Rothschild guest hosts for the day. At the top of the hour, Matt talks with Earl Ingram on the death of longtime Milwaukee journalist Joel McNally. Known for his progressive legacy and self-proclaimed "cockeyed optimism," Matt and Earl remember Joel extremely fondly. He leaves behind work for us all- to carry on a progressive agenda with good humor and kindness. At the bottom of the hour, Joe Zepecki, progressive communications maestro, joins us for a talk on messaging and moving forward. He asks, and it's an important question, do we want to fight or do we want to win? Well, let's fight to win for all of us, and only so. Because the people we're "fighting" are our neighbors.

Countering the ridiculousness of it all with some sense (Hour 2)

February 26, 2025

Matt Rothschild fills in as guest host for the day. Angela Lang, executive director of BLOC- Black Leaders Organizing for Community- joins as cohost for the hour. We discuss efforts towards countering the hate, the divisiveness, and the absolute nonsense of the second Trump administration. In this hour, we address the world's richest person, unelected and unqualified, dominating the first Cabinet meeting and AI generated videos about ethnically cleansing Gaza. So what can we do about it? How can we bring some sense to this all as a form of countering the destruction of our democracy? Well, we can protest. As several hundred did yesterday outside Senator Ron Johnson's Madison office to voice their concerns over Medicaid cuts forecast in the next national budget.

Another powerful way of countering the divisiveness is to find what brings us together. Like the first signs of spring in the calls of a sandhill crane or buds on a tree. Or in poetry. As he often does, Matt chose a powerful poem to share to end the show. Listen to the full session of Clint Smith reading his poetry or choose only the poem we shared here.

Taking action to protect democracy (Hour 1)

February 26, 2025

Matt Rothschild guest hosts for the day as Dom catches some sun and key lime pie. At the top of the hour, Heather duBoi Bourenane, executive director of the Wisconsin Public Education Network, joins us. Today marks the middle of Public Education Week, an annual celebration WPEN holds to honor the incredible work of our state's public schools. The week caps with a day of action to support public schools, get involved!

At the bottom of the hour, Matt talks with Lisa Lucas, from All In Wisconsin about how to take action to protect democracy. In a time when so many of us feel paralyzed by the intentionally overwhelming noise of federal chaos, we need help moving to action. Here's a helpful guide on how to get there.

D’ya smell that? It’s the foul stench of authoritarianism (Hour 2)

February 19, 2025

Matt Rothschild joins us as cohost. There's something in the air, do you smell it? It's thick, ugly, and burnt. Smells like the authoritarianism we fought Britain against for our independence. It smells like the fascism we fought to eradicate in Europe last century. And it smells like crap. We don't do that "king" bs here. Yet President Trump asserts his desire to be a king daily, including today by posting "Long live the king" in reference to himself. In this hour we catalogue SOME of Trump's latest affronts to our nation's method of governance. We prophesy that Trump will go down in history as a traitor to everything this country holds dear. Of course, we already mark him as such. For the CONSTANT barrage of lies he spews to the public- most recently concerning Ukraine and who started that war. And for every torch he's taken to our constitution, our country's norms, and the foundations that serve We The People. In what's nearly a footnote to the day, it turns out DOGE isn't delivering on any of their promises as they continue to lie to us each day. Wow, how shocking.

We end the day, of course, with something good. And because we have Matt joining us as cohost, we have poetry. Listen to this 5-minute read of June Jordan's own "Poem About My Rights". Powerful, moving, and deeply relevant 50 years later.

A Path Forward for Wisconsin (Hour 1)

February 19, 2025

Matt Rothschild joins us as cohost.

In this hour, it's all about Wisconsin and our path forward! Yesterday, citizens across the state cast their ballots in the spring primary. All wards voted in the State Superintendent of Public Instruction primary, and many wards also voted in school board primaries and for local referenda. After the tally, incumbent Superintendent of Public Instruction Jill Underly and pro-voucher challenger Brittney Kinser advance to the general election. Also yesterday, Governor Tony Evers delivered the biennial 2025-2026 budget address to a joint session of the state Legislature. In it, Evers outlined his priorities for funding essentials in this state. At the top of his list: PFAs remediation, tax relief for those who genuinely need it, school funding, and expanded access to health care. Gee, how radical!

Revisiting Josh Kaul, Bill Press, and Bishop Budde (Hour 1)

February 14, 2025

This episode is a curated Best Of, pulled from January 22nd and 23rd. First, from January 23rd's first hour, our talk with Wisconsin's Attorney General Josh Kaul on the lawsuit our state joined opposing President Trump's unlawful attempt to end birthright citizenship. Then, from that day's second hour, checking in with our friend Bill Press on how to navigate the firehose of BS from the chaos administration.

The second half hour comes from our second hour on January 22nd, with Matt Rothschild as cohost. We turn to Bishop Mariann Budde and the moving sermon she delivered to the Interfaith Inaugural Service on January 21st. And of course, we ended that day with something good.

Here’s all the money, but where’s the heart and the voice? (Hour 2)

February 12, 2025

Matt Rothschild joins us as cohost for the day. Turning away from national politics for a bit, we look at the race for Wisconsin's Supreme Court. This election is shaping up to be exorbitantly expensive, with millions and millions already raised by the two candidates. In 2015, Scott Walker signed a bill into law rewriting Wisconsin's election finance laws. Now, money is speech in Wisconsin, and there is no limit on donations to state parties, who can then disperse the funds as they see fit. It's law, but it's not right. And we ask where the speech is for those of us without tens of thousands to give to our favored candidates. Where is the voice for the working people? Where are our elected leaders to stand up to the billionaires stripping our government for parts and footing us with the bill?

Billionaires don’t belong in the Oval (Hour 1)

February 12, 2025

Matt Rothschild joins us as cohost for the day. Every day of President Trump's second term is apparently 'bring your billionaire to work' day. With Elon Musk, the world's richest person, answering questions from press in the Oval, we're wondering who the real president is. And Musk is already openly admitting to misleading the public- we call that 'lying' round here- on rationales for cutting life saving aid. No, there was not $50,000,000 in condoms allocated out of USAID's funding. And despite Musk claiming that his team will get things wrong and make it right, we're still waiting on an apology and clarification. And we'll keep on waiting. Because it's just not going to happen. Ok, so Musk's lying to us. But is Trump at least delivering on his promise to lower inflation ON DAY ONE? Nope. Not even in the first few weeks.
