Civic Media Spotlight for March 22nd & 23rd (Hour 2)

March 22, 2025

To begin this hour, we check in on a conversation had on Maino & the Mayor this week. Cari Josephson from the Walk To End Alzheimer's brings a special guest with her: former Wisconsin Governor Marty Schreiber. Governor Schreiber has recently penned a book called My Two Elaines about his story of caregiving for his wife, Elaine. H e writes about having to watch his beloved wife gradually transform from the woman who had gracefully entertained in the Executive Residence to one who sometimes no longer recognized him as her husband. Net proceeds from the sales of My Two Elaines will be used to promote Alzheimer’s caregiver support programs.

After that, on the John and Gordy Show, the guys chat with Pam Jahnke from the Midwest Farm Report about some stories on her radar this week, including big changes coming to milk processing for cheese, and a new study out analyzing just how rural Wisconsin is these days.

Next, the Dom Salvia Show - with Matt Rothschild as cohost - talks with Julie Bomar, executive director of Wisconsin Farmers Union, about the devastating impact of President Trump's service cuts on Wisconsin farmers and food insecure populations. The programs cut in Wisconsin also linked farmers directly to schools, providing high quality nutritious food for students.

Closing out the week, UpNorthNews’ Christina Lorey joins Nite Lite with Pete Schwaba! Christina and Pete talk about the great work that UpNorthNews does, the best frozen pizzas in Wisconsin, and some inventions you might not know were from Wisconsin.

Evasion (Hour 2)

March 19, 2025

Matt Rothschild joins us as cohost for the day. At the top of the hour, we bemoan the eternal evasion of responsibility and consequence our President enjoys. He disobeys judges and flouts the authority of the entire judiciary branch? No problem. He rejects the authority of the legislature to control the budget? Not an issue! He commits massive fraud in New York and earns status as a convicted felon for it? Nobody (it seems) cares! Evasion after evasion, for his wealth and his status. And now, GOP lawmakers around the country are avoiding holding town halls after those who have have been confronted by disappointed constituents. The latest such case coming from a deep-red district of Nebraska. And what about the less MAGA-sympathetic GOP members like Senator Murkowski (R-AK)? Well she says that those who share her "concerns" are being quiet because they're scared for their political lives...

We hear from audience members who share frustrations and concerns over the trajectory of this administration. And then we finish the day, as always, with something good. Matt brought some Margaret Atwood to share today- listen to her piece "Night Poem" and enjoy the serenity.

Wisconsin Tropes (Hour 1)

March 19, 2025

Matt Rothschild joins us as cohost for the day. We begin our news coverage in Milwaukee. Well, at least in the conspiracy that somehow, in each election, shenanigans occur in Milwaukee that causes *some* Republican candidates to lose. Judge Brad Schimel, candidate for the Wisconsin Supreme Court, began laying his election rejection seed corn based on this tired old trope. Of course, we hear this any time a Republican fears they may lose- or after they DO lose- the state. Because of a law that prohibits the counting of absentee ballots until election day. Milwaukee has a large population of absentee voters, and represents a very liberal region. These two factors combine to cause the appearance of a "ballot dump" late into election night as the absentee ballots are finally fully counted and reported. This doesn't need to be a problem. There was a bipartisan bill in the state legislature to address it. Republicans killed it.

In the bottom of the hour, Julie Bomar- executive director of Wisconsin Farmers Union- joins us. Wisconsin farmers will once more face steep consequences due to this round of Trump Trade Warring. Cancelling grants that supported Wisconsin farmers who grew food for nutrition assistance programs will make this worse. Another dark trope we could do without repeating.

Weekly Best of Dom Salvia Show for Mar 15

March 15, 2025

Catch up on this week's best segments!

First, from Tuesday's first hour: in his first term President Trump was so proud of the stock market and told everyone to watch it. Now as it tumbles into correction? Not so much...

Then, from Thursday's first hour, we talk with Earl Ingram about key takeaways from Wednesday's first and only debate between candidates for the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Next, from Monday's second hour: in discussion with Harvey Kaye, how can we discuss democracy when the press is in a stranglehold?

Finally, something good- of course! We conclude with Wednesday's final segment with Matt Rothschild sharing poetry and bird calls.

Constitution Consternation (Hour 1)

March 12, 2025

Matt Rothschild and Angela Lang, Executive Director of BLOC- Black Leaders Organizing for Community guest host today. Continuing the discussion Dom started with Angela yesterday, what should be the focus of the constantly expanding campaign for the Supreme Court of Wisconsin? Well, how about the Constitution? Many ads in these SCoWis races attempt to frame opponents as "soft on crime," which both serves as a racist dogwhistle and to reopen community wounds. Yet the state's highest court doesn't address common crime. It's time for change in these races- and we don't mean change as in money. With $59 MILLION already invested into this race, we desperately need LESS money in our judicial races. Regardless, this is the race we have this time. BLOC endorses Judge Susan Crawford for SCoWis Justice. Check your voter registration and all items on your ballot, then make a plan and vote by April 1st!

Then, moving on to another threat to our Constitution, this time our nation's. Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil is currently being held in an ICE detention facility after the Trump administration revoked his status as legal permanent resident. He has not been charged with any crime. So why is he there? Because of speech- a right protected in our First Amendment.

We end our day with something good- always. And as Matt joins us, we have a poem. Enjoy Audre Lorde's "A Woman Speaks," some bird calls, and a call to come together in community.

Weekly Best of Dom Salvia Show for Mar 8

March 8, 2025

Catch up on this week's best segments!

First, from Wednesday's second hour with Matt Rothschild. Our president delivered an address to a joint session of Congress. We have thoughts...

Next, we turn to Tuesday's second hour as Jess guest hosted with Harvey Kaye. The real conflict in this country has never been Democrat vs. Republican. It's oligarch "economic royalists" vs. the rest of us.

Then, from Thursday's second hour with Earl Ingram as cohost with Dom. As we discuss the devastating cuts to veterans' benefits and care, friend of the network LuAnn Bird calls to share her and her husband's story. Then, should Rep. Al Green have been censured for his simple defiance during the 47th POTUS' address to Congress? Probably not. So we listen to his powerful remarks.

And of course, we finish with something good. This also comes from Wednesday's second hour, as Matt shares a gorgeous poem.

Budget Dust and America’s Real Problems (Hour 2)

March 5, 2025

Matt Rothschild joins as cohost for the day. Over the past few weeks, the 47th POTUS' administration has trumpeted their efforts to cut the federal budget down to a reasonable size through the unconstitutional DOGE. And as we've seen, DOGE not only lacks integrity and focus, they lack receipts for anything substantial. In fact, the only verifiable cuts amount to, well, budget dust. And the cuts to our federal income in the form of massive tax decreases for the wealthy will absolutely dwarf any supposed savings from DOGE.

Last night, President Trump delivered an address to a joint session of Congress. Read the transcript if you wish, but save yourself two hours if you haven't already watched the sorry proceedings. More importantly, read fact checks, because the speech was- unsurprisingly- riddled with lies, falsehoods, and absolute bogus. And watch a real speech addressing the state of our union, delivered by Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Because the needs of We the People are more than budget dust. And the cuts proposed to essential spending like Medicaid in the President's "big beautiful bill" are far more than budget dust.

And of course, we end with something good. Matt, as always, brought a poem. Listen again to Joy Harjo's "Remember," and take time to recall the beauty and wonder of life.

Yet another week, still inefficient (Hour 1)

March 5, 2025

Matt Rothschild joins as cohost for the day. In local inefficient news, US Rep. Van Orden (R- WI, 3) threatened a veteran with termination from the VA for inefficient use of his time. Why? Well because the employee sent a message to Van Orden over LinkedIn asking for assistance against the federal firing sprees. Oh and one note, the veteran had already been fired in the mass purge of all probationary federal workers when he messaged Rep. Van Orden...

Also in the local markets proving his true inefficient nature, the king of it all- Elon Musk. This week, a Musk-backed group dropped big bucks on ads aimed at influencing the race for Supreme Court in Wisconsin. With lies. The most inefficient of communications. We do hope they backfire and end up pulling in some disenfranchised progressives who actually believe in the positions they're falsely tying to Crawford. It's also disgusting just how MUCH money Musk can *legally* pour into this race. Read Matt's take on that situation here. Regardless, remember that our next election is April 1st, when you can vote for our next SCoWis Justice, Susan Crawford! Check your voter registration and all items on your ballot at myvote.wi.gov.

The Stakes of the Supreme Court Race in Wisconsin

February 27, 2025

Host Matt Rothschild sits down with founder of the Recombobulation Area and Civic Media Political Editor, Dan Shafer, for a conversation on the April 1st Wisconsin Supreme Court race. The two take a look at the candidates in Dane County Judge Susan Crawford and former Republican Attorney General Brad Schimel, and share what makes this different from recent Supreme Court races in Wisconsin as well as what is at stake depending on who wins in April.

Resist: by learning to fly! (Hour 2)

February 27, 2025

Matt Rothschild guest hosts for the day. At the top of the hour, Matt talks with Dave Zirin, sports editor at The Nation. In a contrary opinion to Matt's guests in the first hour, Dave calls for a deep reckoning within the Democratic party to address the failings that led to our 2024 loss. While he portrays a pessimistic attitude towards democracy, he urges us to resist. Resist the lies, resist the hate, and resist the temptation to curl up and consign our country to the dustheap. Instead, let's raise aspirations of what the world, and what this country can be. We must stretch our wings and reach out for better for all of us. And it starts with accountability.

Speaking of wings, in the bottom of the hour, we shift from Matt's passion for politics to his passion for birds. Jeffrey Worrel joins us representing the Raptor Resource Project. Just this week, the Raptor Resource Project caught- and after some research, released- the oldest known golden eagle in North America! Jeff shares a wealth of information with us, as we end our day with an extended "tell us something good" segment. Of course, with Matt, we formally end with a poem. Today, we share "Beside the Golden Door" by Rita Dove.
