Toddler Accidentally Shot and Killed

RIPON, Wis (WRPN)- Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s investigators are looking into the tragic shooting death of a two-year-old child.

According to Sheriff’s officials three young children were placed in a vehicle in the driveway of a home. In the brief time their parent returned to the home to grab an item they forgot, a four-year-old in vehicle found a loaded firearm in the center console.

The firearm discharged, striking a two-year-old sibling. Despite lifesaving efforts of a Sheriff’s deputy and first responder the child died at the scene. No one else was injured.

A resident out for a walk called 911 to report the incident just before 10:30 Friday morning. Deputies, North Fond du Lac Ambulance and Lamartine First Responders responded to the scene. ThedaStar medical helicopter was also requested.  

The family involved in the incident is cooperating with investigators.
