Sub-Zero Stand

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WGBW) – The bitter cold set the perfect stage and an “Ice Out” in downtown Green Bay. 

Dozens of Green Bay residents took to the streets yesterday to mark the one-year anniversary of President Trump’s second inauguration with a city-wide “ice out” walkout.

Gathering at Harvey Street Park, demonstrators joined a nationwide movement to voice their opposition to current administration policies, braving sub-zero temperatures to ensure their message was heard.

Students Lead the Charge

The frigid weather didn’t deter local youth, many of whom walked out of classrooms to participate. Leah, a student at John Dewey Academy of Learning, emphasized that the discomfort of the cold was a small price to pay for political expression.

“It’s important to get out and have your voice heard,” Leah said, noting that without active participation and visible protest, “progress won’t be made.”

A Nationwide Movement

The Green Bay event was part of the Free America Walkout, a massive coordinated effort featuring more than 600 walkouts across the country. All events were synchronized for 2:00 p.m. on January 20th.

According to local organizers, the demonstration was a response to several recent federal actions, including:

• Escalating ICE raids across various jurisdictions.
• New restrictions on gender-affirming care.
• The deployment of National Guard troops in several U.S. cities.

Defending Democracy

Organizers stated that the primary goal of the “ice out” was to send a direct message to Washington. Participants expressed deep concerns regarding the current political climate, with many speakers at Harvey Street Park characterizing recent administration tactics as a threat to American democracy and a slide toward fascism.

Despite the freezing conditions, the atmosphere remained determined as Green Bay joined dozens of other Wisconsin communities in the national day of action.
