Candlelight Vigil for Renee Good held in the pouring rain

OSHKOSH, WI—(WISS)— Despite the pouring rain and a chill in the air, over 50 people filled the Opera House Square in Downtown Oshkosh on Thursday night. They carried umbrellas and candles as they gathered in unity for a vigil honoring Renee Nicole Good. An agent with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shot and killed Good in Minneapolis on Wednesday.

“Peaceful Patriots,” a non-partisan group that provides a venue for protesting, rallying, and gathering for the Fox Valley and NE Wisconsin organized the vigil. Danny Schierl is the founder and organizer of the group.

We’re gathered here not only to honor her (Renee Good) and what she was doing,” Schierl said. “ She was just a person! But also to show solidarity with Minneapolis.”

One of the people standing in the rain was Jennifer. She would not give her full name because of fear of repercussions at work, but she said she had to be a part of the vigil.

“To have somebody taken in that manner–that is completely 100% not her fault–is absolutely heartbreaking. And to watch the reaction of our government who is supposed to be protecting its citizens from its law enforcement, is heartbreaking,” said Jennifer. “I mourn for her family, I mourn for her community, her neighbors, her friends, her children.”

Leo Nelson was at the vigil with two friends from the Youth Democratic Socialists of America. 

We’re here repping our organization, and also repping the struggle against ICE in America, who think that they can use terrorist tactics and violence and intimidation to scare not only people of color, but like every American citizen within the United States with their violent tactics. And we’re here to show that’s not okay,” Nelson said.

Others like, Donna Janus, needed community at a time of national strife.

“I decided this morning that it’s so painful–the images–That I needed community and I needed hugs,” said Donna Janus, one of the attendees. “I knew there would be good people here.”

Appleton Protest

Hate Free Outagamie plans another Fox Valley vigil and protest against ICE actions at Houdini Plaza in Appleton on Friday, January 9, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. In its social media post, Hate Free Outagamie said, “No ICE in our streets. We demand accountability and will not quietly accept the bullsh*t narrative being spun to justify this act of violence.”

Backstory

One day before the incident, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem told Fox News that nearly 2000 ICE agents were in Minneapolis searching for illegal immigrants.

Videos of the shooting show Good in her SUV, trying to drive away during a raid. An ICE agent shot her while she was in the vehicle. Noem has called Good’s participation “an act of domestic terrorism” and said the shooting “is the direct consequence of constant attacks and demonization of our officers by sanctuary politicians who fuel and encourage rampant assaults on our law enforcement.”

President Donald Trump blamed the “radical left.” He called the ICE agent’s actions self-defense and urged greater protection for law enforcement in a Truth Social post.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called for ICE to leave the city immediately in a press conference. He said, “They’re sowing chaos on our streets, and in this case, quite literally killing people.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are investigating the shooting.
