WISCONSIN (CIVIC MEDIA) – The poor air quality in Wisconsin this week continues into Friday.

Primary pollutants in the air are at an unhealthy level due to wildfire smoke across much of the state. The National Weather Service (NWS) says the Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to continue at Unhealthy levels through Thursday and into Friday. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says they expect conditions to slowly improve beginning on Friday. Levels will still be high enough that sensitive groups will still be affected.

Sensitive Groups

According to a press release from the Wisconsin DNR, “People with heart or lung disease, older adults and children should consider making outdoor activities shorter and less intense and reducing heavy exertion. Consider rescheduling or moving events indoors.”

The best way to protect yourself from wildfire smoke is to keep track of your local air quality. Stay indoors with your doors and windows closed. Avoid activities that increase your indoor air pollution. This includes activities like vacuuming, frying food, burning candles, or using gas-powered appliances. You can install a high-efficiency air filter in your home. If you have to be outdoors for longer periods, use an N95 mask.

For Everyone

NWS advises residents to keep outdoor activities shorter and less intense. Officials recommend going inside if you have symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath. Unhealthy air quality can also cause irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat. Sensitive groups should consider moving all activities inside. You can check the current air quality by visiting the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website.
