WISCONSIN (CIVIC MEDIA) – During Invasive Species Action Month, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) encourages residents to take steps to prevent the spread of invasive species.

State law prohibits the transportation or introduction of certain invasive species without a permit in an effort to protect native species from harmful effects, including depopulation. Residents who identify invasive plants or insects should report them to DNR officials.

The DNR has offered several tips on preventing the spread while residents enjoy outdoor activities:

  • Hiking and camping: Stay on designated trails, roads, and other developed areas. Follow state firewood guidelines.
  • Fishing and boating: Clean all boating equipment and gear. Inspect and remove dirt, mud, seeds and other debris from equipment before going on the water. Drain water from gear after use. Do not move fish from any body of water.
  • Gardening and leisure: Add non-invasive plants to your garden. Learn to identify and remove problem plants.

Learn more on prevention efforts and additional tips to prevent invasive species from spreading at the DNR website.
