His analysis is sobering. Geoff Kabaservice, Vice President of Political Studies at the Niskanen Center, is pointing out the ways global political shifts are challenging democratic societies. He uses his recent travels as examples and says there are rising tensions as leaders struggle with governance while still trying to deliver on promises to their citizens. Kabaservice joins Mark Becker, host of Rational Revolution, to discuss the current state of democracy.

“Historical lessons of the 1970s, when economies faltered and social unrest grew, parallels today’s political climate,” Kabaservice says. “As political discontent continues to rise worldwide, from the U.S. to Europe, there are dangers of political polarizations threatening democratic stability in both the developed and developing world.”

The conversation dives deeper into the growing influence of social media in shaping political discourse. Kabaservice and Becker also discuss immigration stress on social systems, and the extremism that threatens the democratic foundations of nations.

“There is a critical need for democratic societies to avoid the mistakes of history and focus on constructive governance,” Kabaservice explains. “With Trump’s political return and his project for reshaping government, the future of bipartisan cooperation is perilous. There are growing dangers of executive overreach and the erosion of checks and balances.”

Kabaservice wonders about democracy, asking if it can withstand the forces threatening to erode it, or if this will be the dawn of a new era of authoritarianism?
