MADISON, Wis. (Civic Media) — The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) issued an advisory Wednesday as respiratory virus cases surge across the state, with officials emphasizing the importance of vaccination.

DHS reports high respiratory illness activity statewide, with significant increases in flu, COVID-19, and RSV cases. Emergency department visits for these illnesses have risen, particularly among infants, young children, and older adults.

Despite the surge, vaccination rates remain low. Only 31% of Wisconsinites have received a flu shot this season, while just 15% have gotten an updated COVID-19 vaccine.

“The best way to protect yourself and those around you from respiratory viruses is to get vaccinated—it’s never too late,” said DHS Respiratory Disease Epidemiologist Tom Haupt.

The department urges everyone six months and older to get flu and COVID-19 vaccines. Specific groups, including infants, pregnant people, and older adults, may also be eligible for RSV vaccines.

DHS recommends preventive measures such as hand washing, avoiding sick people, and wearing high-quality masks.

The increase has lead one Wisconsin hospital group to bring back masks, although at this point, only Aurora Healthcare has made that move.

Resources for vaccine scheduling are available through local health departments, community clinics, and vaccines.gov. People can also dial 211 for assistance.
