2 people hurt after downtown Madison explosion

MADISON, Wis. (WMDX) – Two people are hurt after a fire from a reported explosion in downtown Madison Wednesday.

The Madison Fire Department said that they were called to 301 N. Broom St. at 7:52 a.m. for a report of a possible fire and several manhole covers showing smoke.

According to a release by the Fire Department, several 911 calls said they were seeing the same thing on area streets.

Firefighters closed streets in the area and investigated a building under construction, where they found smoke but no fire. Fire crews said that there was no more smoke coming from the building or the manhole covers in the area, so there was no active fire.

Two construction workers at the building were taken to the hospital for fire-related injuries, according to the release. The injuries are not life-threatening.
