MILWAUKEE, Wis (Civic Media) – Messmer Catholic Schools has announced that two of it’s schools are becoming part of Seton Catholic Schools.

St. Mary School, located at 3027 N. Fratney Street, and St. Rose School, located at 514 N. 31st Street, will officially transfer June 30, 2024.

In a letter to state and local officials, including Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson and Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson, Messmer cited the sale of the schools to Seton Catholic Schools as the reason for them no longer employing the teachers.  Seton, the Archdiocese of Milwaukee’s school system, will take over operations of the schools beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year.

“In January of this year, Messmer announced that the Saint Mary elementary school and Saint Rose elementary school would be purchased by Seton Catholic Schools,” the letter stated. “As a result, Messmer will not operate these locations after this school year.”

The transfer will impact a total of 73 employees across the two schools. Messmer has notified all affected staff that their employment will be permanently terminated effective June 30, 2024. However, the letter noted that most teachers have been offered contracts with Seton to continue working at the schools under the new administration.  Seton Catholic Schools currently operates 14 schools in Milwaukee County. The addition of St. Mary and St. Rose will expand Seton’s footprint in the city.

Messmer High School, located at 742 W. Capitol Drive, will continue operations uninterrupted.
