When you think of Wisconsin and politics, what do you picture? Independent thinking, telling the truth, and consideration of new or alternative ideas used to be the Badger State way. If those words now seem foreign to you, it’s this type of thinking Maggie Daun wants to bring back to her home state. During The Maggie Daun Show‘s debut episode from 2-4 p.m. on Civic Media, Maggie kicks off her two-hour afternoon time slot in stellar style!

Maggie Daun credits her parents for demonstrating the importance of serving others, even when facing obstacles or setbacks. She’s worked under this philosophy while on a team of global law firms in both New York City and Chicago.

Daun eventually chose to move back to the Milwaukee area where she served as the county’s corporation counsel, until recently joining the Civic Media radio network on a full-time basis.

But leaving Milwaukee County, at this moment and in this year, I decided perhaps this is a better venue for my voice and my services to take a different form while knowing I can still make a difference.

“My journey has been overwhelming,” Daun says. “The goal has always been to make life better for my friends, family, and neighbors while working in government service. But leaving Milwaukee County, at this moment and in this year, I decided perhaps this is a better venue for my voice and my services to take a different form while knowing I can still make a difference.”

The new version of Daun’s show started with several special guests, including Civic Media’s Earl Ingram, host of The Earl Ingram Show. She asked what keeps him interested in radio.

“Well, I came into it as a middle-aged guy,” Ingram says. “But, what keeps me going is the idea there’s so much happening and often people just aren’t aware. Everyone’s trying to live their lives, and I see so many people doing what society asks, yet they are still struggling to get by every day.”

“So, learning and sharing is important to you,” Daun says. “And in particular learning and sharing how to pick apart government services to help others find a way to make those services work in their own situations.”

Steve, a caller from Green Bay, joins in on the conversation.

“I listened when your show was on at night,” Steve says. “You are calm, you let me make my point, but then you build on it. I can tell you care. You are trying to help us have a discussion and make sense of things. Having you in this new afternoon spot is only going to continue growing this opportunity.”

As her first new show continues, Daun is joined by one of The Devil’s Advocates Radio hosts, Dom Salvia.

Conversation with Dom Salvia

“Are political parties good or bad?,” Salvia asks. “I mean, you can join or not, but I wonder if a nonpartisan Presidential election could work?”

“It is interesting to see the former President remaking the RNC in his own image,” Daun says. “And especially after dumping his most current RNC chair.”

“Donald Trump came in so easily and took over the party and continues to take over,” Salvia says. “If you aren’t MAGA, you are going to be on your way out.”

“It used to be important in Wisconsin to question authority, hold their feet to the fire,” Daun responds. “We used to want independent thinking, truth-telling, and new ideas. But it’s more about personality politics now.”

“It is all about the brand,” Salvia says. “But from a citizen’s perspective, I was raised with all of those ideals. It’s what we should still have but it’s sure changed here.”

You can listen as the show moves into its new, second hour with Civic Media’s Jane Matenaer, host of Matenaer on Air, and Civic Media’s Kathryn Lake, Director of Programming.

The Maggie Daun Show airs weekdays from 2-4 pm across the Civic Media radio network and on the Civic Media app. You are always welcome to call 855-75-CIVIC to add your thoughts to the discussion. Maggie Daun looks forward to hearing from you.
